What you share with apps
When you use Sign in with LuxID, an app can ask for some information from your LuxID Account. You always see the full list and agree to it before anything is shared (see Sign in with LuxID).
There are two kinds of information an app can ask for: details from your profile, and verified facts about you.
Details from your profile
These are things you have added to your LuxID Account. An app may ask for:
- Your name
- Your email address
- Your phone number
- Your postal address
- Your date of birth
- Your gender
Each app asks for different information, depending on what it needs. You decide which of these to share - some may be essential for the app to work, others optional.
Verified facts about you
LuxID can also confirm certain facts about your information, not just the information itself. You do not type these in - LuxID works them out from what it already knows. For example:
- Whether your email address is verified (you confirmed it when you registered).
- Whether your phone number is verified (you confirmed it by SMS).
- Whether your phone number or address is based in Luxembourg.
- Whether you are over a certain age.
Verified facts share less about you
For these facts, LuxID shares only the answer - not the information behind it.
For example, if an app only needs to know that your phone number is verified, LuxID tells it yes or no. It does not hand over your actual phone number. In the same way:
- An app can learn that you are based in Luxembourg without receiving your full address.
- An app can learn that you are over 18 without receiving your date of birth.
This lets you prove what an app needs to know while sharing as little personal information as possible.
Why an app might ask for a verified fact
Many apps deliberately ask for a verified fact to collect as little personal data as possible. Often an app does not need - or want - your full details: it may not need your date of birth, only to know that you are over 18; or it may not need your phone number, only to know that it is a Luxembourg number. Asking for the fact instead of the data helps protect your privacy.
Some apps also require a particular fact before they let you in. For example, an app might only allow access to people with a verified Luxembourg phone number. In that case, LuxID confirms whether you meet the requirement - yes or no - and the app decides whether to grant you access, without ever receiving your phone number itself.
If you do not meet a requirement an app has set, you may not be able to use that app.
You stay in control
- You always see exactly what an app asks for before you agree.
- You can decline optional information; declining something essential may stop you from using the app.
- You can review or remove what you share at any time from account.luxid.lu (opens in a new tab) > Applications.
