Create a LuxID Account
What you need
Before you begin, make sure you have:
- An email address you own and can access (LuxID does not provide email - you bring your own)
- Optionally, a mobile phone that can receive SMS messages (for 2-Step Verification)
- A few minutes to complete the process
You must be at least 16 years old to create your own LuxID Account.
Step 1: go to the sign-up page
Open your browser and go to login.luxid.lu (opens in a new tab) and click Sign up to open the Register page.
Step 2: enter your email address
Type the email address you want to use with your LuxID Account. This can be any email address you already own, such as a personal or work email.
This email address becomes your LuxID identifier. You will use it every time you sign in.
Step 3: set a strong password
Create a password and confirm it. The Register page checks each requirement as you type - your password must:
- Contain at least 12 characters
- Contain at least one lowercase letter
- Contain at least one uppercase letter
- Contain at least one digit
You type your password twice to confirm there are no typing mistakes. Special characters are allowed but not required. Avoid common passwords and anything based on personal information like your name or birthday. LuxID also checks your password against known breached-password lists and will ask you to choose a different one if it has been compromised. For detailed guidance, see Create a strong password.
Password managers - such as Passbolt (Luxembourg-based), Bitwarden, or your browser's built-in password manager - can generate a strong password and save it for you. If you use a password manager, make sure it syncs across all your devices - otherwise, a password changed on one device may not be available on another, which can lock you out. See Password managers for more details.
Step 4: accept the terms and create your account
Tick I acknowledge having read and accepted the LuxID terms and conditions (opens in a new tab), complete the anti-bot verification, and click Create account.
Step 5: verify your email
After submitting your email and password, LuxID sends a verification message to the email address you provided. Open your inbox, find the message from LuxID, and copy the verification code. Learn how to recognise legitimate LuxID messages. For more details about the verification process, see Verify your account.
Go back to the LuxID page in your browser and enter the code in the verification field. Keep the LuxID page open while you check your email - you will need to return to it.
If you don't see the email: Check your spam or junk folder, and make sure your mailbox is not full. Make sure you entered your email address correctly. If the email still hasn't arrived after a few minutes, click I did not receive the activation e-mail on the LuxID page, or go directly to the resend activation page (opens in a new tab).
If your code has expired: Verification codes are time-limited for security. If your code no longer works, go to the resend activation page (opens in a new tab), enter your email address, and you will receive a new code.
If you accidentally closed the LuxID page: Go to the resend activation page (opens in a new tab) to request a new verification code for your email address.
Once your email address is verified, your LuxID Account is created and you are signed in. That is the end of sign-up. Adding a phone number and completing your profile are optional and are done later from your account (see below) - they are no longer part of the onboarding flow.
What happens next
After creating your account, you are redirected depending on how you arrived at the sign-up page:
- If you came from a LuxID Partner service (e.g., you clicked "Sign in with LuxID" on a partner app), you will be redirected back to that service after completing the sign-up.
- If you signed up directly via login.luxid.lu (opens in a new tab), you will be redirected to your LuxID Account page.
If you are not redirected automatically, you can access your account at any time at account.luxid.lu (opens in a new tab).
From your account page, you can:
- Sign in to LuxID Partner services and manage your connections (view and revoke access)
- Add a phone number, which can be used as a 2-Step Verification method (LuxID sends an SMS code to verify it)
- Complete your profile, such as your first and last name - shared with partner services only when you give your consent
- Add and configure passkeys for passwordless sign-in
- Enable 2-Step Verification for stronger security
- Set your preferred LuxID display language
- Verify your identity through LuxTrust if needed
- Delete your account (right to be forgotten)
If your LuxID Account is managed by an organisation through the LuxID Federation Service (LuxID Pro), your organisation may restrict which partner services you can access. If you are unable to sign in to a specific service, contact your organisation's administrator.
Troubleshooting
Email already in use
If LuxID tells you the email address is already registered, you may have created an account before. Try signing in with that email, or use the Forgot password? (opens in a new tab) link to recover access. If you are still stuck creating your account, see Common signup problems and solutions.
Verification email not arriving
- Check your spam or junk mail folder, and make sure your mailbox is not full.
- Make sure you entered your email address correctly.
- Wait a few minutes - email delivery can sometimes be delayed.
- Request a new verification email from the sign-up page.
