Create a strong password

Why your password matters​

Your LuxID password protects your digital identity and every partner service connected to your account. A strong, unique password is the first line of defence against unauthorised access.

LuxID password requirements​

Your LuxID password must:

  • Be at least 12 characters long
  • Contain at least one lowercase letter
  • Contain at least one uppercase letter
  • Contain at least one digit

The sign-up page checks each of these rules as you type. Special characters are allowed but not required. In addition, LuxID checks your password against databases of known breached passwords (which include commonly used passwords like "password123") and will ask you to pick a different one if yours has appeared in a breach.

Tips for creating a strong password​

Make it long and memorable​

Longer passwords are significantly harder to crack. Try using:

  • A phrase from a favourite song, book, or movie
  • A series of unrelated words that are meaningful to you
  • An abbreviation made from the first letter of each word in a sentence

For example, "My cat sleeps on the blue sofa every night" could become MyCat9BlueSofa - long, mixes upper- and lowercase with a digit, unique, and easy for you to remember.

Make it unique​

Use a different password for your LuxID Account than for any other service. If someone gains access to a password you reuse, they could access all accounts that share it.

Avoid personal information​

Do not base your password on information that others could guess or find online, such as:

  • Your name, nickname, or initials
  • Birthdays or anniversary dates
  • Phone numbers or addresses
  • Names of family members or pets

Avoid common patterns​

Stay away from simple sequences and keyboard patterns, such as:

  • "123456" or "abcdef"
  • "qwerty" or "azerty"
  • Repeated characters like "aaaaaa"

Use a password manager​

If you find it difficult to remember unique passwords for every service, consider using a password manager. Password managers generate and securely store strong passwords so you only need to remember one master password.

Keep your password safe​

  • Never share your password with anyone, including people who claim to be from LuxID or POST Luxembourg. LuxID staff will never ask for your password.
  • Only enter your password on the official LuxID page at login.luxid.lu (opens in a new tab) - never on a page you reached by clicking a link in an email, SMS, or message. See Recognise legitimate LuxID messages to learn how to spot fakes and avoid phishing.
  • Do not write your password on a sticky note or store it in an unprotected file.
