Avoid getting locked out

Why this matters

If you enable 2-Step Verification on your LuxID Account - which we strongly recommend - you need a second factor every time you sign in. But what happens if you lose your phone, change your number, or can't access your authenticator app?

Without a backup option, you could be locked out of your account and all the LuxID Partner services connected to it.

Set up multiple 2-Step Verification options

The best way to avoid a lockout is to register more than one 2-Step Verification method. LuxID allows you to add multiple options, so if one is unavailable you can fall back to another.

For example, you could set up:

  • Two phone numbers - Your primary number and a second one (e.g., a work phone or a family member's number). Each number must be validated.
  • An authenticator app and a phone number - If you lose your phone, you can still receive a one-time code on another number. If your number changes, you can still use the authenticator app.
  • A passkey and a phone number - Your passkey works even without network coverage, while the phone number serves as a backup.
  • A LuxTrust certificate and a phone number - If you have linked your LuxID Account with LuxTrust, your LuxTrust certificate can serve as an additional authentication method alongside your other 2-Step Verification options.

To manage your 2-Step Verification options, go to account.luxid.lu (opens in a new tab) > Security > 2-Step Verification.

Keep your contact information current

If you change your phone number, update it in your LuxID Account before deactivating the old number, or temporarily deactivate the 2-Step Verification method linked to that number. If your old number is your only 2-Step Verification method and you can no longer receive codes on it, you will not be able to sign in.

To update your phone number, go to account.luxid.lu (opens in a new tab) > Account. For the full walkthrough of switching to a new phone without losing access, see Change the phone number on your account and how it's used.

What to do if you are locked out

If you have lost access to all your 2-Step Verification methods and cannot sign in:

  • If you have a passkey registered on another device, try signing in from that device.
  • Contact LuxID support for assistance. You will need to verify your identity before access can be restored.
