Firefox with the Firefox Relay extension can crash on macOS
What is happening
If you use Mozilla Firefox on macOS with the Firefox Relay extension enabled, Firefox can use up all the available memory on your Mac and crash when you open a LuxID page, such as the sign-in screen.
Your LuxID Account is not affected. This is a stability problem in the browser, not a problem with your account or your data.
What Firefox Relay is
Firefox Relay (opens in a new tab) is a service and browser extension from Mozilla, the maker of the Firefox browser. It lets you create email "masks" - alias addresses that forward to your real inbox - so you can sign up to websites without revealing your real email address. The extension detects email fields on a page and offers to fill in a mask for you.
How to tell if this affects you
- You are using Firefox on a Mac.
- The Firefox Relay extension is installed and turned on.
- Firefox slows down, becomes unresponsive, or crashes when you open the LuxID sign-in page.
What to do now
Use either workaround until a fix is in place.
- Disable the Firefox Relay extension. In Firefox, open the menu (labelled Menu, the three-line icon, top right) > Add-ons and themes > Extensions, find Firefox Relay, and switch it off. - Or use a different browser. Open the LuxID page in Safari, Google Chrome, or Microsoft Edge instead.
What we are doing
We are aware of the issue and are working on a solution so that LuxID pages work normally with the Firefox Relay extension. This page will be updated when the fix is released.
