2-Step Verification
2-Step Verification adds an extra layer of security to your LuxID Account. Even if someone obtains your password, they will not be able to sign in without the second factor.
In your LuxID Account settings, 2-Step Verification is currently shown as Two-factor authentication (2FA).
If your LuxID Account is provided by your organisation (LuxID Pro), your administrator may control your 2-Step Verification options. See Manage your LuxID Pro account.
Available methods
LuxID supports the following second-factor methods:
- One-Time Codes (SMS or voice call): Receive a verification code via text message or voice call to your registered phone number.
- Authenticator apps: Use an authenticator app such as Aegis (opens in a new tab) (open source, Android), FreeOTP (opens in a new tab) (open source, iOS/Android), Authy (opens in a new tab), or Microsoft Authenticator (opens in a new tab) to generate time-based one-time codes.
- Passkeys: Use a passkey stored on your device or security key for phishing-resistant authentication.
- LuxTrust: Use a linked LuxTrust digital identity. Unlike the other methods, you set this up under Account rather than Security - see Link your digital ID to your LuxID Account before it will appear as a 2-Step Verification option.
Turn it on
- Go to LuxID Account (opens in a new tab) > Security.
- Find the 2-Step Verification section.
- Choose your preferred verification method and follow the on-screen instructions.
Turn it off
- Go to LuxID Account (opens in a new tab) > Security.
- Find the 2-Step Verification section.
- Disable the method you want to remove.
Turning off 2-Step Verification makes your account less secure. We strongly recommend keeping at least one second-factor method enabled.
Removing an authenticator app may require you to enter a current code from it. If you have lost access to that app, you may need to contact LuxID support to remove it - even if you still have another 2-Step Verification method.
Signing in
When 2-Step Verification is enabled, you will be asked for your second factor after entering your password. Follow the prompt for your chosen method to complete the sign-in.
Fix common issues
- Lost access to your authenticator app? If you have a backup method configured (such as SMS), use it to sign in and then reconfigure your authenticator app. If you have lost the device entirely, see What to do if you've lost your 2-Step Verification device.
- Changed your phone number? Update your phone number in LuxID Account (opens in a new tab) > Security as soon as possible. See Change the phone number on your account for the full steps.
- Cannot sign in? Contact LuxID support for assistance. If your second step is not accepting your code, see 2-Step Verification is not working first.
Protect your personal information
2-Step Verification helps protect your personal information by ensuring that only you can access your LuxID Account, even if your password is compromised. This is especially important because your LuxID Account may be used to sign in to multiple LuxID Partner applications.
