Link your digital ID to your LuxID Account
You can link a digital identity to your LuxID Account through LuxTrust. A linked digital identity provides identity-proofed authentication, adding a stronger layer of security to your account and promoting it to LuxID Verified.
What is LuxTrust?
LuxTrust is Luxembourg's trusted identity-proofing provider. Through LuxTrust, you can link an eIDAS-compatible digital identity to your LuxID Account - for example a Luxembourgish eID, a Smartcard, LuxTrust Scan, a Signing Stick, or LuxTrust Mobile. Once linked, you can use it for identity verification when performing sensitive actions or signing in to LuxID Partner applications that require a higher level of assurance. See LuxTrust (opens in a new tab) for more about these products.
Link a digital identity to your LuxID Account
- Go to your LuxID Account (opens in a new tab) and open the Account tab.
- Under Digital identities, open Digital identity service.
- Select Add a digital identity, enter a name (alias) for it, then select Confirm.
- Choose your device - Luxembourgish eID, Smartcard, LuxTrust Scan, Signing Stick, or LuxTrust Mobile - and follow the on-screen instructions from LuxTrust to finish linking.
Remove a linked digital identity
- Go to your LuxID Account (opens in a new tab) and open the Account tab.
- Under Digital identities, open Digital identity service.
- Select the digital identity you want to remove and confirm the removal.
Use your linked digital identity for verification
When you perform a sensitive action within your LuxID Account (such as changing your password), you may be asked to verify your identity using your linked digital identity. This makes it much harder for an attacker to impersonate you.
Use your digital identity for 2-Step Verification
You can also use a linked digital identity as a second step when you sign in, alongside your password:
- Go to your LuxID Account (opens in a new tab), open the Account tab, then Digital identities > Digital identity service.
- Select Edit next to your digital identity.
- Tick Enable this digital identity for two-factor authentication, then select Confirm.
We are working on letting you use a linked digital identity to recover access to your account - for example if you forget your password and have also lost access to your mailbox. This is planned for a future update.
What if you do not have LuxTrust?
Identity-proofing products like LuxTrust are mainly aimed at people who live in Luxembourg. If you work in Luxembourg but live across the border - for example as a cross-border commuter - you may not have a LuxTrust identity or a Luxembourgish eID.
For these situations, LuxID is preparing to support a future EU-wide digital identity wallet. Every EU country will offer this wallet to its citizens and residents, and a wallet issued in one country will be recognised across the whole EU. LuxID intends to support it as soon as it becomes available, so you will be able to reach a higher level of assurance even without LuxTrust.
How your information is protected
When you link a digital identity, LuxID stores only the information necessary to verify your identity. Your data is processed in accordance with the LuxID Terms and Conditions (opens in a new tab) and applicable data protection regulations. POST Luxembourg, as the data controller, ensures your personal data is handled securely.
